How a squared away fit-biz operates

Take a sec and let these words from Jim Rohn really sink in…

You know what the most fundamental of all business practices is?

The creation and implementation of a business plan and marketing calendar.

But I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts…you don’t have either of these.

Or if you do, they are generic at best, mere shells of what they should be, and rarely used.

It’s been said thousands of times, but bears repeating…

Would you EVER attempt to drive to a new location across town without a map or directions?

Would you EVER tell a client to “just go dome cardio then lift some weights.”

This makes prospects buy your fitness services

At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, the truth is you may never read a more valuable email than this…

If you believe your fitness services can truly help people solve their problems or achieve their goals, then you have a moral obligation to do the best you can to influence and persuade them to take action…to buy…from you.

You are obligated to do everything you can (ethically) to channel their desire for that solution in your direction.

Because if you don’t, the prospect will either buy from a lower quality provider (not getting the help she needs) or do nothing at all (not getting the help she needs).

So if you can look yourself in the mirror and honestly say you believe you have the best solution, then it’s your responsibility to market and sell it effectively.

Does that make sense to you?

I hope so, because when you take this mindset, it gives you real clarity and an urgent sense of purpose. It makes it obvious why you must be evangelical in your marketing and outreach.

And it frees you from any emotional baggage about selling your services.

You rise above “salesperson” and become an “ambassador of health and fitness.”

But even with this level of moral commitment and obligation to enthusiastically promoting your services, there is one more element you must incorporate into your marketing in order to compel people to take action - to buy your services.

There must be a deadline (urgency based in fear of loss).

Last week Sean and I were doing a consultation with Platinum Member Clint Howard.  Clint was telling us about a mailing he just did to test a new 3-step direct mail campaign.

He received zero calls from letters #1 and #2. But then the third “final notice” letter hit, driving home the hard deadline for taking advantage of the offer. And clients started rolling in before the offer expired.

Deadlines RADICALLY improve response.  And that’s why you must use them.

Not as some sort of cheesy manipulative tactic, but as a method for compelling people to take action on their own behalf.  Because, and this is really important…

…people will act with conviction and urgency moreso when they fear loss, than when they desire gain.

Sure, they know they need your services, but they’ll procrastinate - they’ll rationalize and justify inaction when the primary psychological driver is gain.

But when there is a real threat of losing out on something (i.e. your special offer), the urgency to act is dramatically heightened.

To sum up, here’s how to get prospects to buy:

1. Provide THE best service.
2. Believe it is THE best.
3. Be evangelical about spreading the news.
4. Make compelling offers.
5. Use a deadline or scarcity (fear of loss outpulls desire for gain)

Speaking of deadlines, here’s one you need to be aware of.

Hope you had a great weekend.

Eric, Dick, and I are all home after a trip to Canada for some business.

Nice and cool up there, and gotta say I’m missing it after stepping back into the North Carolina heat wave.

I should’ve had more pictures, but here’s a quick one from the airport with NPE member John Wheeler and his key staff members Terra and Sophie. John recently got in on our Deep Core™ class, and after getting a taste of what NPE has to offer… he called up wanting more! So we met to discuss how we can best help him and his 20 clubs grow to the next level. Looks like we’ll be doing some work together and we’re all excited about the opportunities this presents.

Anyway, enough about that, the show must go on, so let’s get back to talking about you and your fitness business.

I recently had a call with NPE Platinum member Chris Hill…

…Now Chris is a kick butt studio owner, and everything he touches turns to gold. But, there’s something “odd” about Chris’s situation that always gets me thinking…

…You see there are millions of companies across America who have been making the same amount of profit year-in-and-year-out for God knows how many years.

“Why Should I Choose YOU?”

“Why should I choose you?”

That’s the single most important question you must have a great answer to.

Because it’s the question your prospect is silently asking.

Competition is fierce, the economy appears to be in a tailspin (but folks ARE buying - you just have to target the right ones), and even if the economy were stellar and you were the only game in town…

…people would still need a good answer to that question.

Because there are always other options, including doing nothing at all.

The answer to this question, “why should I choose you?” is your Unique Selling Proposition, also known as your Competitive Marketing Advantage.

And getting it right is critical.

But very, very few fit-pros (or business owners in general) give this all-important question the serious thought and effort it deserves.

Just rattling off some benefits is NOT enough.  Everybody’s promising the same thing.

The point is…

What makes you UNIQUE and DIFFERENT?  What is so special about what you do that will compel your marketplace to sit up, take notice, and take action?

There is always something — the ‘work’ is in the locating or creating.

HINTS:

1. Look at your personal narrative - your story. What’s special or unique about it?

2. Look at your technology - your proprietary training ’system’ - what’s special or unique about it?

3. Look at your guarantee - your risk reversal - what’s special or unique about it?

These are not the only places to look (or create), but they are good places to start.

Get to work on your USP - on formulating a great answer to the all-important question of “why should I choose you?”

Do You Want This Fitness Marketing Tool?

My wife, Brandy is in Chicago today attending a conference on persuasion and influence based on the teachings of Robert Cialdini’s book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.

She was there yesterday, too. Spent the day in the conference and the evening shopping on the Magnificent Mile (gulp!)  Not looking forward to the MasterCard bill.

Brandy’s recently launched her own biz, after ten years in sales for a Fortune 500 company.

And she’s doing almost everything right.  she’s already in action…already marketing to drive leads and build a list.

And she’s getting LOTS of information and instruction, learning best practices and getting coached. She and I meet every Sunday for a strategic planning session so I can help her flesh out her marketplace domination plan!

But I’m far from her only resource (I just happen to be the cheapest).

In fact, she’s on a bunch of local ‘gurus’ newsletter lists (she’s doing biz locally). One of them is a woman who is apparently a pretty sharp marketer.  A few weeks ago, this woman made an offer to her list to provide a 2-hr “marketing plan” session for a couple hundred bucks.

Brandy showed me the info, and we agreed it would be a good move to make in order to get feedback from a local expert. So she bought.

Last Thursday she met with the woman.  When Brandy got home I asked her how it went.

“Great,” she said. “Carol’s full of ideas.”

Red flag goes up for me immediately.

“Ideas?” I asked, “I thought this was a marketing planning session?”

“Well, we didn’t really get around to that because Carol was just throwing out one great marketing idea after the next,” Brandy explained.

I’ve talked to Brandy about this before. And I tell her the same thing I’ve been telling fitness professionals since 1998…

“Ideas…and a nickel…will get a stick of gum.”

Marketing ideas (tactics) are important, for sure.

But they are ONLY *valuable* when they’re integrated into a STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN.

The kiss of death for new biz owners, and veterans alike, is getting caught up in tactical thinking and marketing.
